With over 30 years in the legal arena, Ian has the experience and knowledge to help people from all walks of life and business sectors to make difficult decisions.
Working with a broad cross section of clients that includes individuals and business owners in sectors as diverse as mining, resources, mine worker accommodation, retail cooperatives (supermarkets) and professional services, Ian deals with legal issues that include asset protection, mining and exploration compensation, partnerships, contracts, employment law, wills and estate planning.
High demand for these diverse services satisfies Ian’s appetite for the law while the broad exposure to what are often complex assignments, feeds his already substantial knowledge bank.
Born and raised in Brisbane, Ian studied Law at U.Q. Adding an Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia (IPAA) qualification to his skillset, he has developed a sound understanding of Insolvency Law. This area of special interest has proven to be extremely valuable in his commercial law practice.
Following a year working for a merchant bank in London during the late 70s, Ian gained extensive joint venture experience during the 80s and 90s. While partnering with a geologist, Ian negotiated with tenement holders to present prospects for development with ASX listed companies.
Subsequently he formed a joint venture with a group of scientists who developed new technology for the electro-mining of metals, particularly copper. These experiences presented Ian with valuable insights into small listed companies operating in the mining industry.
Ian provides legal advice for a range of clients and especially appreciates working with those who address problems actively and logically and of course, who understand how to best use his legal expertise and experience for achieving outcomes.
In every sense the advocate, Ian who is quietly spoken and well considered in his responses, has a great ability to not just think outside the square but think things through to a conclusion.
Compassionate and familiar with drafting Power of Attorney documents, Ian’s experiences include a rather unusual situation where he was required to act as the Attorney for a client who had lost capacity and who had no relative or friend qualified to manage the complicated personal affairs. He successfully balanced the interests of the financially dependent family members with the protection of the client’s investments – an experience that affords him the benefit of first-hand knowledge he shares with clients proposing to appoint an enduring power of attorney.
An accomplished manager, Ian naturally takes a helicopter view of situations. Indeed, he believes an important difference that sets Hillhouse Legal Partners apart from other legal service providers is that they explore problems from every angle.
Ian recognises the right for everyone to access quality legal advice. By prioritising, articulating the significance of the problem and the cost, avoiding over engineering and encouraging clients to undertake tasks they can do themselves, he strives to deliver high quality, but affordable legal services.
A mentor for both his clients and his team, Ian is proud that the firm he leads successfully attracts and retains bright young lawyers who bring fresh insights and energy to the law.
Ian is an avid sportsman who surfs, swims, plays golf and these days enjoys cricket and rugby from the sidelines. He has surfed some of the more beautiful parts of the world – PNG, Sri Lanka, Bali and the Maldives – and skied in Japan, Italy and Switzerland.
A man of simple pleasures, Ian enjoys cooking – anything from a spicy curry to a relaxing barbecue at home with family and friends. He strives to maintain a healthy work/life balance as an essential part of his position, helping him retain a broad perspective when providing legal advice.
Indeed, job satisfaction is of high importance to Ian and his level of care and commitment provides legal advice that is not only clear and practical but commercially useful. With his straightforward manner and wry sense of humour, Ian keeps the focus on the important issues and perseveres until he finds a solution.
Not surprisingly, Ian greatly admires courage and determination in others and strives to embrace the same “can do’’ attitude when representing his clients.
